Early in Donald Trump’s presidency, somebody in his White House leaked details of then-national security adviser Gen. Michael Flynn’s phone calls with Russia’s envoy to the U.S. Many assumed that this had been a holdover from Barack Obama’s White House, or even the former president himself.
On Tuesday night, South Carolina Representative Trey Gowdy went on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” to reaffirm that whoever leaked the phone call had broken the law.
“That’s the felonious dissemination of classified material,” Gowdy said, according to Fox News. “[House intelligence committee] Chairman [Devin] Nunes’ point is, I want to know whether or not other people have been unmasked, even though you don’t know about it publicly yet.”
Gowdy went on to criticize FBI Director James Comey for not revealing whether the bureau was investigating the Flynn leak and instead confirming that agents were investigating Trump-Russia connections.
“I think they’re both of national interest,” Gowdy told Carlson. “One happens to be a felony, so I was a little surprised and a little disappointed that [Comey] can’t at least tell us, ‘We are investigating the felonious dissemination of classified material.'”
The South Carolina representative said that any warrant sought against members of Trump’s campaign or transition team would be on file at the “now-Trump Department of Justice.”
“So, if there were an evidentiary basis for that, it’s pretty easy to lay that out,” Gowdy said. “There’s a paper trail.”
