The city of Dallas, Texas descended into chaos on Saturday when 156 emergency sirens went off repeatedly just before midnight.
The Next Web reported that city officials said the sirens were set off by hackers, leading to a huge strain on Dallas’ 911 call system. Dallas officials said police received 4,400 calls between 11:30PM and 3AM, which is twice the average number made between 11PM and 7AM, mostly due to people trying to figure out why the sirens were going off.
Things got so bad that wait times for speaking with emergency services extended to as long as six minutes.
Officials said the city has asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to help track down the perpetrators. Dallas is also working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to set up a text message-based alert system that will notify citizens of ongoing crises in the city.
