Donald Trump is preparing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss various topics including trade and North Korea’s recent missile test. Yesterday, Trump gave an interview about his thoughts going into this meeting that has left many feeling surprised.
“Well, it’s going to be very interesting. Nobody really knows,” Trump told Fox News reporter Pete Hegseth when asked what will happen in the meeting. “We have not been treated fairly on trade for many, many years. No president’s taken care of that the way they should have, and we have a big problem with North Korea, we’re going to see what happens.”

Politico reported that Trump made getting tough on China a cornerstone of his presidential campaign, pledging to name the Asian nation as a currency manipulator on day one of his presidency. However, while Trump has followed through with campaign promises like cracking down on illegal immigration and bringing jobs back to the U.S., he has yet to name China as a currency manipulator.
After North Korea tested yet another nuclear missile this week, Trump called on China to pressure Kim Jong Un to stop with his nuclear tests. Hegseth asked Trump what he anticipates will come of his talks with China about North Korea.
“Well, we’re going to see what happens, Pete,” Trump said. “But I will tell you we’ll be in there pitching, and I think we’re going to do very well.”
