Donald Trump just made a major announcement when he revealed that Callista Gingrich, wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, will serve as his ambassador to the Vatican in the next few weeks.
CBS News reported that her husband Newt warned reporters that they were told “to be very cautious” until the nomination is announced. Callista is known for convincing her husband to convert to Roman Catholicism when they married.
Trump first presented the idea of making Callista the Vatican ambassador back in January, when he “half-jokingly said he was intrigued by the idea” of picking her because it could mean that he could get her husband “out of his hair.” One source said Callista threatened to withdraw her name from consideration because the vetting process has been slow.
Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pennsylvania, was another contender for the position.
Callista is currently president of Gingrich Productions, a multimedia production company in Arlington, Virginia. She has previously worked as a congressional aide in the House of Representatives.
